CIGI Provides Timely Assistance To Employees

Tropical Storm Ondoy which struck Luzon on September 26, caused the worst flooding in the country in over 40 years and led to the deaths of over 250 people and a trail of submerged villages and floating debris. Homes of some half a million people were inundated with water, including those of 18 of our employees. Thankfully, the 18 employees and their immediate families are safe, but the flooding ruined furnishings, appliances, cars and other personal possessions – a life’s work gone in a flash. But amidst the calamity rose heartwarming stories of resilience, courage, generosity and sheer dedication. The storm struck on a Saturday. The CIGI management team was already at work to deal with the crisis by Sunday. Said Dennis Jordan, Country Head, Philippines, “The first order of the day on Sunday was to account for every employee to make sure each one was safe. It was only on Monday night that we were able to heave a big sigh of relief after we had all of those in our hotlist accounted for.” The CIGI team worked quickly to put eight of the affected families in company-arranged temporary shelters and to dispatch basic necessities of food, water, and clothes to every affected employee as soon as it was safe to do so. Each was given emergency funds to help them tide over the immediate period. In addition, the Singapore regional office has pledged additional sum as relief for the affected employees. During the height of the calamity, HR department received messages from employees asking how they could help their peers," said Head of HR, Philippines, Viola de Jesus. "Some of them actually drove to the affected areas to rescue affected peers and bring them to the company-arranged shelters. The maintenance team volunteered to conduct electrical inspection of employees’ houses to make sure the homes are safe." It was business as usual for CIGI as many employees, although affected by the storm, reported for work or ensured that their scope is covered. “I am very proud of the way our team has responded to this crisis,” said Dennis. “I want to thank our employees for unstintingly coming forward to offer assistance to their affected colleagues, to each and every colleague for keeping our business going despite the crisis, and our colleagues in the other countries in our RBU for their well wishes and donations. “The basic needs of our affected colleagues have now been taken care of. Our effort is now focused on helping them to rebuild their homes and return their lives to some degree of normalcy.” CIGI was also featured in an evening news program as one company who provided timely assistance to their employees during dire times. CIGI proved how it truly values its employees, and remains true in recognizing that they are its most important assets in achieving the company’s vision.
